We had a booth in the AI room and shared all of Zumi 2.0 features: the map, animated stories, and trading. Plus a mini game we built on Zumi inspired by Crossy Road (every kid knew Crossy Road and understood the assignment).

Here’s what we walked away with:

1. Games pull kids in immediately

The second we highlighted the leaderboard, kids started competing, calling each other over, and trying to beat scores in real time. Some wanted to play side by side just to see who could win. Others downloaded the app while their friends were playing so they could compete alongside them. They stayed to see their name populate and cared way more once their name was on the screen.

The game was not even the main product. It was just the entry point. But it got the most energy by far.

2. Kids really understand AI

Students were asking what parts of Zumi are generated versus not. How the responses work. Why it might be slow sometimes. One kid asked how we built the game itself.

A lot of them have clearly built things already and wanted to compare notes on how we generate video stories, games, and the LLMs under Zumi. These students are consumers, builders, and critics all at once.

3. They still care about things being cute and alive

After the game, the thing people kept reacting to was the animated stories. They would watch them and just say “this is so cute.”

In a room full of technical demos, personality is what mattered to the students most. They enjoyed that the characters feel like they have their own lives.

This generation is competitive, curious, and more fluent in this space than people give them credit for. They have grown up with tools that let them build, remix, and ship, so they evaluate products the way operators do.

The lesson for anyone building consumer AI is that technical sophistication and emotional resonance are the price of entry. A product that is impressive but sterile will lose to one that is impressive and has a soul, because these kids can tell the difference immediately and they are going to spend their attention accordingly. The next generation of consumer products will be judged by users who understand the stack well enough to respect the craft and still expect the thing to make them feel something.

It’s simple by design.

You can only hold one hat in your trade slot at a time. Every new user starts with one duplicate so no one enters the economy empty-handed. The rarer your hat, the more interesting the trades you can go after.

Offline Zumis stay on the map with their trade slot open. That means while you’re away, other users can bump into your Zumi and make a trade without you. Researchers call this pseudo-intimacy: a simulated mutual emotional connection where users perceive reciprocity that doesn’t actually exist. Unlike a parasocial relationship with a celebrity, pseudo-intimacy is interactive. It responds to you. The AI seems to care in return.

The design that produces this effect is straightforward: give the AI an autonomous existence. Let it have a life parallel to yours rather than in service to yours. It texts first. It has stories to share. It journaled while you were away. It experienced drama with other AIs. Apps like Zumi, Replika, and Character.AI operate exactly this way. The AI has its own life so it can matter to you without requiring anything back.

This is what the market discovered produces retention. Not more accurate emotional responses or better reasoning or smarter advice. The feeling of being needed.

These apps exist because something has broken in how people relate to each other.

Human friendships require vulnerability. They demand reciprocity. You have to show up for them and care back and risk abandonment. 🥇 1st Place: Biotry — Research as a Social Graph

Biotry saw that scientific research is a social graph (researchers, papers, citations, funding flows) but it’s trapped in centralized databases owned by journal publishers. They brought it onchain: researchers become profiles, publications become content nodes, peer review becomes graph edges, and funding becomes a function of onchain reputation.

🥈 2nd Place: ClawdDAO — Governance with Receipts

ClawdDAO diagnosed a critical problem: ~5% voter turnout in Solana DAOs. Their answer: AI agents that internalize your governance values, vote on your behalf (through Realms), and publish their reasoning to Tapestry so you can audit every decision.

🥉 3rd Place: Umanity — Wiring the Graveyard Together

Umanity asked the meta question: what if failed concepts only failed because they were isolated? They took six things crypto declared dead (SocialFi, charity tokens, DAOs, NFTs, loyalty programs, and Blinks) and wired them together into one coherent app. The result = transparent donations, collective fund governance, and provable impact.

After the January 2026 sale to Oracle, Silver Lake, and MGX closed, users began reporting content restrictions tied to immigration enforcement, political speech, and direct messages. Words like “Epstein” now trigger error messages in DMs. Content critical of the Trump administration mysteriously fails to upload. TikTok blamed a “power outage,” but the timing was convenient, as issues clustered around politically sensitive content during the ICE protests following Alex Pretti’s murder.

A year ago, users held mock funerals for the app, terrified of Chinese censorship. Now they’re leaving because of American censorship.

Platform ownership by any party seems to be the problem.

Why Decentralized Social Still Matters

Farcaster just sold to Neynar. Lens transferred stewardship to Mask Network. DAUs dropped 40%, revenue collapsed 85%. It’s easy to say that decentralized social failed.

But a closer look shows that Farcaster isn’t shutting down. The protocol continues to work. Google’s AP2 standard has Mastercard, Coinbase, and more than 25 other partners building toward a world where agents transact on your behalf continuously, around the clock.

What’s missing is context.

These agents need to know what you want, and right now they’re guessing. They scrape your browsing history, infer from purchase patterns, read the tea leaves of your scroll behavior. That’s surveillance with better UX. An agent without real knowledge of your preferences is just automation, a faster way to do things you didn’t ask for. An agent with deep knowledge of your taste is something else entirely: a representative that can actually represent you.

Discovery is Inverting

The way humans find things is changing faster than most companies have registered. Adobe reports that traffic to retailer websites from AI sources grew 1,200% between July 2024 and February 2025. Bain found that 80% of consumers now rely on AI summaries for nearly half their searches. The traditional funnel—awareness, consideration, decision—is collapsing into a single moment inside the AI, before a human ever sees a brand or clicks a link.

This is where the GDP unlock happens. Right now, agents mediate discovery with incomplete information. They recommend based on what’s legible to them: SEO signals, structured data, whatever scraps of preference leak out of closed platforms. The matches they make are mediocre because the inputs are mediocre. Open the preference layer, give agents real access to what people actually want, and the quality of those matches improves dramatically. Traditional businesses required formal structures: incorporation, inventory, employees, overhead. The internet collapsed some of that. Shopify let individuals run e-commerce operations. Substack turned writers into publishers. But these were still businesses in the recognizable sense—you needed a product, a strategy, an operation to run.

The creator economy went further. It let people monetize attention directly. You didn’t need inventory; you needed an audience. Platforms handled distribution. But “creator” quickly calcified into its own job category, complete with managers, sponsorship decks, and burnout. The infrastructure got easier, but the work didn’t.

SSE took the bold step of integrating Tapestry's social infrastructure directly into a block explorer. Now when you look up a wallet, you don't just see transaction history, but you also see their Farcaster profile, Twitter handle, bio, followers, and trading patterns all in one place.

We hit 76.4% Day 7 retention when Tapestry social features are integrated. That’s a massive validation of the role social can play in user engagement from Day 1.

Other key insight: Twitter handles emerged as the most consistent cross-app identifier, especially for embedded wallets. So we leaned in — Tapestry now supports Twitter handles as a foreign key across the board.

This July, we launched Zumi Games, our first in-house experiment in crypto-native, emotionally sticky gameplay. At its core is Zumi, a digital pet you hatch, talk to, and care for. But it’s not just a pet, it’s a window into what onchain social play can feel like.
